| Although there are lots of good books on yoga, it is easier to learn from a teacher. For people with special requirements individual tuition may be appropriate but many start by joining a group class.
A typical yoga class is one to one and a half hours long, with the majority of the time spent doing yoga postures, and the remainder of the class spent on breathing exercises and relaxation. If the format is very different from this then it will usually be mentioned in the title (eg Yoga for Meditation). You should wear something comfortable and loose or stretchy enough not to restrict your movement. Loose trousers with an elasticated waist are ideal. Layered clothing that will let you adjust to the temperature in the classroom is useful - something like a t-shirt with a pullover. |

You do not need to be athletic or unusually flexible to do yoga. Yoga is not a sport. It is not competitive. The care and attention with which you do the practice is much more important than how many postures you can do or whether you can achieve a particular position. Among the effects of yoga are improved strength and suppleness but these will develop from regular careful practice without struggling. |
